Vilac Wooden Animals Counting and Stacking
£20.00
If you have ever watched a small child carefully place a tiny wooden mouse on top of a stack and then look up at you like they have just solved something enormously important, you will understand exactly why this toy exists. There is no noise, no batteries, no drama. Just a bear and her cub, a fox and her two kits, and a two-year-old utterly absorbed in the very serious business of getting everyone home.
We love it because:
- Sarah Betz's illustration style is so tender and soft that the animals feel like characters rather than counting props. Children name them. They give them backstories. The stacking is almost beside the point, except that it is also entirely the point.
- The counting is hidden inside the families, which is just clever. One bear cub, two fox cubs, three bunnies, four hedgehogs, five mice. It lands gently and naturally rather than feeling like a maths exercise.
- Shapes are built in too, completely without fanfare. Each parent animal sits on a wooden shape, circle, rectangle, triangle, square, star, so children are absorbing a lot of early learning while they think they are just playing families.
- The stacking itself is wonderfully satisfying and genuinely challenging enough to hold attention without tipping over into frustrating. Fine motor skills, concentration, hand-eye coordination, all quietly happening.
- It is made from wood and it shows. Solid, smooth, the kind of toy that survives toddlerhood and still looks beautiful at the end of it.
What's in the box:
- 5 wooden animal parents (bear, fox, rabbit, hedgehog and mouse)
- 15 baby animals to stack (because five families need a lot of little ones)

- A first birthday, second birthday, baby shower gift, or an any-Tuesday treat for a child who deserves something lovely
